Closing the Reading Gap: National Assessment of Title I The US Department of Education’s new report on Title I highlights findings from an experimental evaluation of four widely used programs for elementary school students with reading problems—Corrective Reading, Failure Free Reading, Spell Read P.A.T., and Wilson Reading. The evaluation explored the extent to which the programs affect both word-level reading and reading comprehension skills of students in grades three and five identified as struggling readers. Key findings show that the interventions improved some reading skills but did not improve state test scores. In addition, younger students benefited more, and the interventions narrowed some reading gaps. Charting Progress for Babies in Child Care The Center for Law and Social Policy’s Charting Progress for Babies in Child Care project is a multi-year effort to highlight state policies that support the healthy growth and development of infants and toddlers in child care settings. CLASP worked with ZERO to THREE to develop a Policy Framework which sets forth four key principles that establish the foundation of supports that all babies and toddlers in child care need, as well as 15 recommendations that state child care licensing, quality, and subsidy policies should address. Literacy, Youth Leadership and Volunteerism Grants – Deadline: Rolling. The Comcast Foundation supports organizations that make communities stronger through literacy, youth leadership development and community service programs. Award amounts range from $1,000 to $570,000. Eligible applicants include nonprofit organizations with 501(c)(3) status that operate within a Comcast service area. The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) along with its Federal partner, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has released the Fiscal Year 2008 Request for Applications (RFA) for the Drug Free Communities (DFC) support program. This year’s RFA will allow applicants to apply for up to $125,000 in Federal matching funds to strengthen communities and reduce youth drug use through coalition-driven environmental strategies. Due date for the FY08 cycle is Friday, March 21, 2008.
