National Assembly Hosts Fund to Support Volunteer Management

In response to the findings of the Urban Institute's national volunteer management capacity study and the input of volunteer managers, nonprofit leaders, researchers, funders and others, The UPS Foundation has provided seed support for the Fund for the Advancement of Effective Volunteer Resources Management.  This pooled fund, which will be housed at the National Human Services Assembly, will support sector-wide volunteer management priorities identified in the research and by the input received.  (The fund is in the early stages of development; as such, unsolicited inquiries or requests cannot be accepted at this time.) 

New Report on Volunteer Management Capacity

2004 Management Compensation Report Available

United Way CEO Calls for Greater Accountability in Nonprofit Sector

In an address to the National Press Club on November 22, United Way of America President and CEO Brian Gallagher discussed the value of higher standards of accountability -- both fiscal and mission-related -- for the nonprofit sector.  He announced that a new United Way survey shows that only one-third of Americans trust charities more than for-profits, and that increasing trust is linked to holding charities accountable for producing results.  For a transcript of the speech, CLICK HERE.

Resources on Youth Violence

The University of Minnesota Center for Adolescent Health & Development has released a monograph, fact sheet, and journal article on how individual, family and community factors play a role in youth violence.   These resources include sections on risk and protective factors, what works and how you can make a difference.  The information is based on the largest survey ever conducted on American youth, the National Longitudinal Study on Adolescent Health.  For more information, CLICK HERE.

New Study of African American and Latino/Latina Parents

Building Strong Families 2004 is the second study in an ongoing collaboration between YMCA of the USA and Search Institute around strong families and parenting.  Following its 2002 counterpart, which examined the resources that families have or need to raise children that thrive, the 2004 study examines the same family strengths, challenges and resources, this time among African American and Latino/Latina families.  For more information, CLICK HERE.

Report Addresses Inequities in Access to Preschool Programs

This report from the National Institute for Early Education Research argues that preschool plays a vital role in child development and school readiness.  Differences in preschool attendance rates are related to income, education, family structure, maternal employment and geography.   The report provides policy recommendations for ways to expand the number of children enrolling in preschool programs.  For more information, CLICK HERE. 

Reports Show State Budget Pressures Threaten Health Coverage

The Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured released two new 50-state surveys, one of which shows that all states plan more Medicaid cost-containment actions in FY2005.  The second finds that after recent gains, securing Medicaid and SCHIP coverage is more difficult for low-income families in 23 states.  For more information, CLICK HERE.

National Crime Prevention Council Resources for Children of Incarcerated Parents

McGruff® and Scruff®'s Stories and Activities for Children of Promise is a comic-activity book that contains stories about some of the problems and situations children of incarcerated parents face.  Mentor Guide for People Working With Children of Promise provides assistance, ranging from the mechanics—activities a mentor can do with his or her mentee—to the underlying issues—how a mentor can help the child cope with the substantial impact on daily life of the incarceration of his or her parent.   For more information, CLICK HERE.

Congress Passes Spending Bill

On November 20, the House and Senate passed a massive spending bill that funds nine of the thirteen appropriations bills for fiscal year 2005.  All discretionary programs not related to defense and homeland security were cut 0.8 percent.  The Coalition on Human Needs summarized how human needs programs fared, including housing, education, child care, and juvenile justice.  For more information, CLICK HERE.  The Child Welfare League of America updated its chart on funding levels for selected children's programs.  To see the chart, CLICK HERE.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Grants

The Points of Light Foundation is offering MLK Day of Service Grants to mobilize more Americans to observe the MLK Day holiday through service and to implement high quality, high visibility service projects that engage volunteers in meaningful activities.  Rolling deadline (applications will be considered as they are received): December 6, December 13, and December 20, 2004.  For more information, CLICK HERE.

Awards for Protecting Children From Environmental Risks

Awards Honor Achievements of Children With Disabilities
The Foundation for Exceptional Children established the Yes I Can! Health Policy Scholars Program for Students of Color
The Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation established the Barbara Jordan Health Policy Scholars

Program at Howard University to help expand the pool of students of color interested in the field of health policy.  The program brings talented Latino, African American, Asian/Pacific Islander, and American Indian/Alaska Native college seniors and recent graduates to Washington, D.C.,

Grants for Youth Nutrition and Fitness Programs
The General Mills Champions Youth Nutrition and Fitness Initiative will award grants to community-based groups that develop creative programs to help youth (ages 2-20) adopt a balanced diet and physically active lifestyle.  Grants will be awarded to programs that demonstrate significant potential impact on youth groups that are at-risk or that have an impact on large populations of youth.  The deadline is February 1, 2005.  For more information, CLICK HERE.

Award for Nonprofit Leadership Development

January is National Mentoring Month.  Led by MENTOR/National Mentoring Partnership and the Harvard Mentoring Project, the month focuses national attention on the need for mentors, as well as how each of us – individuals, businesses, government agencies, schools, faith communities and nonprofits – can work together to increase the number of mentors and assure brighter futures for our young people.  National nonprofit partners include America's Promise—The Alliance for Youth, Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, Child Welfare League of America, Communities In Schools, the Points of Light Foundation, and Save the Children.  For more information, CLICK HERE.
