As we look back on 2006, it’s easy to focus on the lack of funding for human service issues, or progress on legislation important to our sector. But, there were a few bright spots over the course of this year. Human service and youth development organizations proved the power of collaboration and are celebrating the passage of the Tom Osborne Federal Youth Coordination Act, the Older Americans Act, the Lifespan Respite Act, and amendments to ensure adequate funding, to name a few. At first glance, 2007 looms with many of the same challenges, despite the new make-up of Congress. However, continuing our collaborative efforts will certainly allow for positive outcomes. We hope that everyone has a restful holiday season, and we look forward to much success in 2007. Update on Federal Youth Coordination Act We are continuing to work with Congress to appropriate funding to allow the Federal Youth Development Council to begin its work, and to ensure that funding for the Council is also included in the fiscal year 2008 budget request from the Department of Health and Human Services. At the local level, networks and affiliates have done a spectacular job thanking Congress for passing FYCA, generating nearly 1,000 messages, and contacting almost every member of Congress. We’d now like to ask you to mobilize your grassroots in the waning days of 2006 and into the beginning of 2007. We need the local media to learn more about the importance of FYCA, and how the Youth Development Council will benefit youth nationwide.
