F.I.L.M. Becomes Certifying Organization for President's Volunteer Service Award

Finding Inspiration in Literature and Movies, also known as F.I.L.M., recently became a certifying organization for the prestigious President’s Volunteer Service Awards.  F.I.L.M. encourages young people to take the initiative to give back to their communities by promoting youth volunteer service leadership in the programs created for each film/book combination. Each program includes an activity guide with theme related modules, including one dedicated to leading a service project. F.I.L.M. encourages participating youth/organizations to track their service/volunteer hours on the President's Volunteer Service Award website, www.presidentialserviceawards.gov.  As a certifying organization, F.I.L.M is able to monitor and track hours on program related service projects and eventually present qualifying youth and/or organizations with the President’s Volunteer Service Award. F.I.L.M. hopes that through this form of organized volunteering youth will develop a lifelong commitment to volunteering as well as take advantage of the many other benefits of volunteering. For more information about the F.I.L.M. project and the President’s Volunteer Service Award, visit www.youthFILMproject.org.

Travelers Aid International

www.travelersaid.org

Travelers Aid (TA) is the oldest, non-sectarian social welfare organization in the United States. Its mission is to advance and support a network of human service provider organizations committed to assisting individuals and families who are in transition or crisis and are disconnected from their support systems. Travelers Aid International, based in Washington DC, oversees a network of 50 social service agencies and help desks in transportation centers, including 23 airports, throughout the United States, Canada and Puerto Rico. The national office supports and assists its member organizations through communications, education, advocacy and standard-setting. It also directly operates local TA programs in Washington DC (Union Station, Reagan National and Dulles International Airports) and in the New York area at JFK and Newark Liberty International Airports. Travelers Aid is sometimes called the “social services agency for the transportation industry.” In 2004, TA assisted 5 million individuals at airports, bus and train stations and provided casework services to an additional 200,000 individuals in crisis. While each member agency shares the core service of helping stranded travelers, many Travelers Aid agencies provide shelter for the homeless, transitional housing, job training, counseling, local transportation assistance and other programs to help people in their communities who encounter crises as they journey through life.

New Report on Teen Volunteering

15.5 million youth, or 55 percent of youth ages 12 to 18, participated in volunteer activities during 2004, according to a new study released on November 30 by the Corporation for National and Community Service.  The study, based on a national survey of more than 3,000 American teens, also found that three-fourths of youth who volunteer do so through religious, school, or youth organizations.  For more information, click here.

NCOA and ABC Launch My Medicare Matters™ Education Program

On Nov. 22, 2005, the Access to Benefits Coalition (ABC) and the National Council on the Aging (NCOA) announced a major national effort. My Medicare Matters™ will help people with Medicare understand the new Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage (Part D) and make the enrollment decision that is right for them. The program will provide on-the-ground teams in 27 states for the next six months. The educators will participate in an anticipated 5,000 community events in more than 300 counties, using NCOA's BenefitsCheckUpRx and Medicare's Prescription Drug Plan Finder and giving beneficiaries personalized guidance. In addition, the project has a new Web site for people with Medicare and their families. The site, www.MyMedicareMatters.org gives information in easy-to-understand language so that people with Medicare can work on their own to assess their options, find and compare plans, and enroll online if they choose to enroll.

New Profile of African Americans, Latinos, and Whites with Medicare Can Guide Outreach

The Kaiser Family Foundation has held two telephone briefings for journalists this month to highlight the importance of helping African Americans and Hispanics who rely on Medicare to understand how this program will work. Both groups suffer more from certain illnesses, such as diabetes, than their white counterparts, and drug coverage could help them manage these diseases. The foundation has prepared a chartpack, A Profile of African Americans, Latinos, and Whites with Medicare: Implications for Outreach Efforts for the New Drug Benefit, that includes demographic data that highlights potential implications for outreach efforts. Increasing Awareness for Girls in IT

Cisco and The National Center for Women & Information Technology recently launched a campaign to increase awareness of education and career opportunities for girls and women in math, computing and technology. The campaign is designed to address the declining interest of girls and women in information technology careers, a problem that persists despite U.S. Department of Labor predictions that the number of future jobs in the professional technology workforce will outstrip available, qualified candidates by two-to-one. The campaign kicks off with a letter to parents, educators, and girls and introduces a comprehensive digital library with a variety of resources for encouraging interest in math, computing and technology, including information about careers, local technology clubs, programs, curricula and summer camps. Hearing on Reintegrating Ex-Offenders; Bill Provides Grants to Nonprofits

The House Subcommittee on Crime, Terrorism and Homeland Security held a hearing in November on The Second Chance Act (H.R. 1704), bipartisan legislation that addresses the reentry of the nearly 650,000 men and women who are released from incarceration to communities nationwide each year.  All of those testifying commended the bill for its provisions dealing with post-release transitional housing, employment promotion, support for children of incarcerated parents, and the expansion of reentry courts.  The bill also provides $15 million a year in grants to nonprofit organizations for mentoring and other transitional services essential to reintegrating ex-offenders.  For more information on the hearing, click here.  For an action alert on the bill, click here. Bill Introduced to Help Immigrant Youth

A bipartisan group of Senators on November 18 introduced the Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act (S. 2075), which would facilitate access to post secondary educational opportunities for immigrant students in the United States who currently face barriers in pursuing a college education. The “DREAM Act” would also allow  immigrant youth who have long resided in the U.S. the chance to adjust their immigration status.  For more information, click here.  (Source: National Council of La Raza)

Report Examines President’s Record on Children’s Health Care

Last year, Connect for Kids (CFK) asked President Bush and candidate John Kerry a series of questions about their stands on critical children’s issues.  In this report, CFK looks back at the President’s answers on children’s health care, and how they measure up against administration actions to date.  For more information, click here.

Evaluation of State Children's Health Insurance Program

This Congressionally mandated evaluation of the State Children's Health Insurance Program (SCHIP) found the program to be largely successful.  According to the report, states developed and designed effective outreach strategies to attract and enroll children, and adopted simplified application and enrollment processes to aid families and retain enrollees.  SCHIP programs were found to provide health coverage to the intended population, particularly children who would otherwise have been uninsured.  For more information, click here.

Analysis: Nutrition Programs Can Help Low-Income Families Cope with High Energy Costs

A new paper from the Food Research and Action Center reviews various strategies in food stamps and child nutrition to help low-income families deal with the classic heat-or-eat quandary at a time of skyrocketing heating fuel costs.  The federal nutrition programs cannot solve this problem for low-income families, but they can reach eligible, unserved families quickly; can adjust benefits to meet rising shelter costs; and otherwise help families and child-serving institutions.  For more information, click here.
