Through a shared commitment to collaboration in strengthening nonprofit management, the National Human Services Assembly and the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business are sponsoring a unique institute for new Chief Executive Officers. For three days, recently appointed CEOs of nonprofit organizations will have the opportunity to join their peers in exploring the most challenging issues that impact their multiple roles. (PDF) National Assembly Members Respond to Hurricane Katrina National Assembly members have made a dramatic impact in response to the recent devastation of Hurricane Katrina. Organizations such as American Cancer Society, American Heart Association, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Lutheran Services in America, National Urban League, NeighborWorks America, Points of Light Foundation, The Salvation Army, United Jewish Communities, United Way of America, Volunteers of America, YMCA of the USA, Youth Service America and YWCA USA. Coming to a Theater Near You...Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story The National Collaboration for Youth in partnership with the Heartland Film Festival's Truly Moving Pictures is excited to present DreamWorks Pictures' Dreamer: Inspired by a True Story. Set in Lexington, Kentucky, this is a story about perseverance and empowerment in the face of hardship. In addition to providing an inspirational message, this film also succeeds in vividly depicting a rural lifestyle in which horses and people are closely connected. Regardless of whether the children who see this movie are from a rural or urban background, they can absorb the central message of this film--with hard work you have the power to achieve your goals, despite any challenges that may confront you. If you want to know if your organization is an NCY member Click Here Family Strengthening Policy Center Update The Policy Center aims to make family strengthening a priority by mainstreaming neighborhood-based, family-centered practices, programs and policy. By leveraging the National Human Services Assembly's network of nearly 70 human and health service member organizations, the center's objective is to promote family policy that contributes to family economic and social empowerment. Learn more about the Center here. The Policy Center recently released two new policy briefs; Family Centered Community Building and Supporting Families with Incarcerated Parents. Family-Centered Community Building This brief examines family-centered community building which is the process of engaging family residents in sustained collaborative efforts to strengthen and improve conditions for families with children in an identified geographic area. Supporting Families with Incarcerated Parents This brief examines risk and protective factors of children of incarcerated parents; intervention models as well as state and federal initiatives to address this vulnerable population. Special section on developmental effects of parental arrest on children and State Department of Corrections initiatives related to families of inmates. The Extra Mile - Points of Light Pathway to be Dedicated The Extra Mile — Points of Light Volunteer Pathway is a new national monument dedicated to the spirit of service in America. Honoring heroes of our Nation’s service movement, the Extra Mile comprises a series of bronze medallions forming a one-mile walking path just blocks from the White House. From founders of major service organizations to civil rights leaders, the 20 initial honorees selflessly championed causes to help others realize a better America. The Extra Mile is an initiative of the Points of Light Foundation and was approved by Congress and the District of Columbia. Mental Health Groups Launch Web Site Dedicated to Medicare's New Prescription Drug Benefit Leading mental health organizations have joined together to create a central resource on Medicare´s new prescription drug benefit. The new website, www.mentalhealthpartd.org, contains easy-to-understand, top-line information tailored specifically to psychiatrists and other physicians, providers at community health centers, and consumers and their families. The goal of the Mental Health Part D collaboration is to provide synthesized information that will facilitate informed decision-making for providers and consumers as they choose new Medicare prescription drug plans. Fact Sheet - Protecting Families from Housing-Related Health Threats The National Center for Healthy Housing and the Alliance for Healthy Homes has collaborated to create a fact sheet on protecting families from housing related health threats in the aftermath of a hurricane. The fact sheet contains information on flooding, carbon monoxide poisoning, pest infestations and damaged lead-based paint. [Source: Alliance for Children and Families] National Urban League CEO Calls for “Katrina Bill of Rights” and Gulf Coast Authority Marc Morial, President & CEO of the National Urban League and former Mayor of New Orleans, in a major policy address on October 12, put forth the National Urban League's 5-point "Katrina Bill of Rights" and called for the establishment of a Gulf Coast Authority to coordinate the rebuilding effort. According to Morial, the people of the Gulf Coast must be guaranteed the following rights: to recover, to vote in their home states, to return to their home, to rebuild, and to work. America's Promise Presents Capitol Hill Seminar on Youth Issues On September 22, America's Promise - The Alliance for Youth co-sponsored a panel discussion on Capitol Hill on the state of America's children. The event focused on "America's Children: Key National Indicators," a biennial report to the nation. Nine panelists engaged in discussion on three areas: provocative findings from the report and suggestions of how to address the issues identified in the report; evaluation of the raw data in the report; and what the federal government can do to address the needs of children displaced as a result of Hurricane Katrina. State Fact Sheets for Grandparents and Other Relatives Raising Children In a unique national partnership, AARP and several other organizations, including the Child Welfare League of America and Generations United, compiled state fact sheets for grandparents and other relatives raising children. These fact sheets provide state-specific data and information for all 50 states and the District of Columbia about support services and policies that can help make the care giving role easier. Hearing Focuses on Economic and Budgetary Impacts of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita The director of the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) told the House Budget Committee on October 6 that Hurricanes Katrina and Rita have temporarily and significantly reduced the growth of national economic output, but the overall effects that recovery and rebuilding will have on economic activity may more than offset that drag by early next year. The CBO director also urged Congress to incorporate planning for future disasters in the regular budget process. For more information, click here. Report Profiles Successful Efforts to Address Racial Disparities in the Juvenile Justice System Youth of color make up one-third of all youth in America, but two-thirds of youth in juvenile detention facilities. African-American, Latino, and other youth of color are more likely to be locked up than white youth, even when charged with the same types of offenses. No Turning Back: Promising Approaches to Reducing Racial and Ethnic Disparities Affecting Youth of Color in the Justice System, a new report by the Building Blocks for Youth initiative, documents effective strategies by advocates, policymakers, and public officials to reduce inequities in the justice system. In Search of Baby Boomer Volunteers to Feature in National PSA Campaign The Corporation for National and Community Service is preparing to launch a national public service announcement campaign to encourage Baby Boomers to lend their lifetime of skills and experience to volunteering and service. Capturing the experience and energy of Baby Boomers to help meet critical needs will be a priority for the Corporation and the larger nonprofit sector over the coming years. They are currently in search of REAL Baby Boomer volunteers and national service participants to feature in the campaign. Several volunteers will be selected to feature in the television, radio, and print campaigns. Others will be promoted through outreach to the media and published on their website and in publications. Individuals must be between the ages of 42 and 60 and be RSVP volunteers, Foster Grandparents, Senior Companions, or AmeriCorps and AmeriCorps*VISTA members. To nominate someone, email Siobhan Dugan at sdugan@cns.gov no later than Friday, October 14. Recognition for Families that Volunteer The FamilyFun Volunteers Program recognizes U.S. families that volunteer together to benefit others or improve the community or world. Families that enter this contest should consist of not less two persons, at least one of whom is less than 18 and one 18 or older. For five Grand Prize families, DisneyHand will donate $5,000 to the nonprofit charity or public school of each family’s choice, and for 25 First Prize families, $1,000 will be donated to the organization of each family’s choice. All winning families will receive a package of FamilyFun books and kits. The entry deadline is January 15, 2006. Call for Papers on Cyberbullying Cyberbullying: A New Variation on an Old Theme, a collection
of accessible readings for those who wish to learn more about
these forms of human-computer abuses, will cover a number of
major areas including an overview, demographic information, similarities and differences to face to face bullying, issues of cyber psychology, legal issues and strategies to address the problem.
