White House Convenes Conference on School Safety On Tuesday, October 10, the White House and the Departments of Justice and Education held a conference on school safety. The event, hosted by 4-H at its National Conference Center, presented three panels plus a closing discussion. The first panel focused on prevention, the second on preparation, and the third on recovery from an incident. While none of the speakers represented community organizations, it is clear that they play a role and also need to be prepared, just as schools do. The president emphasized that states, local municipalities, and school districts are responsible for school safety, with the federal government role as information broker. No new policy recommendations were released as part of the conference, although Education Secretary Spellings mentioned the work of the Commission on Safe and Drug Free Schools. For details on speakers, resources, and a partial transcript, see the links below: Violent Crime in Schools Decreases Despite the media portrayal of schools as unsafe places, a joint report by the Bureau of Justice Statistics and National Center for Education Statistics states that students are twice as likely to be victims of serious violence away from schools. This annual report examines crime occurring in school as well as on the way to and from school and informs the nation on the nature of crime in schools. A key report finding states that the violent crime victimization rate at school declined from 1992 to 2003. Even so, violence, theft, bullying, drugs, and weapons are still widespread.
