In response to a question from Senator Hatch (R-UT) about his pro bono work, Judge Roberts said, “One of the pro bono activities that I'm most committed to is a program sponsored by the Supreme Court Historical Society and an organization called Street Law. They bring high school teachers to D.C. every summer to teach them about the Supreme Court. New Report Details Budget Cuts' Impact on Disaster Recovery Groups Federal programs of interest to nonprofit organizations – groups that often serve as the backbone of communities in times of crisis – will be cut between $40 billion and $71.5 billion over the next five years, according to a new Aspen Institute analysis of the most recent presidential and congressional budget proposals. Private charitable giving would have to increase two to three times its current rate in order to offset the proposed reductions in housing, employment, education, and social services programs. For more information, click here. Federal Government Streamlines Access to Benefits for Hurricane Katrina Victims Many victims of Hurricane Katrina no longer have the records or legal documents to help prove their eligibility for benefits from various government programs. The President has granted special "evacuee" status to individuals affected by Katrina, which will simplify the enrollment process for people who need the services of programs like Medicaid, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) and Head Start, as well as child care support, foster care assistance, mental health services and substance abuse treatment services. For more information, click here. Websites Provide Information on Obtaining Services for Hurricane Victims The Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) has launched a special section of its website to assist Hurricane Katrina victims with access to the federal nutrition safety net. It contains summaries and links for information on best practices and rules for getting nutrition program assistance to those affected by the hurricane. The Coalition on Human Needs (CHN) is compiling information on its website about access to Medicaid, Food Stamps, Head Start, unemployment benefits, and other services for people displaced by the catastrophic storm. Congress Prepares Hurricane Relief Legislation The Senate Finance Committee introduced the Hurricane Katrina Tax Relief Act of 2005 (S. 1696), which provides tax changes to help the victims directly and incentives to encourage charitable giving. The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee held a roundtable discussion on health, labor, and education needs in rebuilding communities affected by Hurricane Katrina, the first step in the preparation of a bipartisan HELP Committee legislative package. The House Ways and Means Committee released a summary of the Committee’s hurricane tax relief measure. For more information, click here.
