Poverty and Income 2005 Numbers Released by Census Bureau

The U.S. Census Bureau released poverty and income data for 2005 on August 29.  There was no statistical change in the number of children and people in poverty in the U.S., stopping a four-year increase.  Other indicators, however, did not show good news, including a 1.3 million person increase in the number of people and children without private or government health insurance, and a decrease in wages for both men and women.  An analysis by The Brookings Center on Children and Families shows an increase in poverty for female-headed families.  For a brief summary of the data in graph format, as prepared by The Brookings Center on Children and Families, click here. (PPT File)   For access to all the information and data tables, visit the U. S. Census Bureau by clicking here.

"We Are Family" Supports Hurricane Relief

The Points of Light Foundation (POLF) has launched We Are Family to generate funds for organizations that are directly providing services to families affected by Hurricane Katrina. POLF will act as a clearinghouse for ongoing healing and relief, directing funding to on-the-ground efforts across the country. The project's website will direct visitors to resources on family strengthening as well as ways to support the ongoing relief effort. On Thursday, August 31, a group of artists, featuring Patti Labelle, and POLF CEO Robert Goodwin appeared on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno to promote the cause and perform the song.  For more information visit www.wearefamily2006.com

Voices from the Gulf Coast - Leadership 18 Initiative

During the past year these organizations have collectively invested more than $2.2 billion in post-Katrina relief, recovery and rebuilding efforts. GAO Report on Community Development Block Grants

This GAO report discusses how recipients use CDBG funds and how the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) monitors use of funds and compliance.  The report recommends that HUD centrally maintain data to determine compliance, solicit input from field staff, prepare for an aging workforce, and develop guidance on sanctioning CDBG recipients who are not in compliance. Career and Technical Education Act Reauthorized

On August 14, President Bush signed into law the reauthorization of the Carl D. Perkins Career and Technical Education Act.  The act governs the flow of about $1.3 billion in federal funding to state and local work-related classes, programs, and training.  Among the notable changes: programs will be required to report state test results and graduation rates, as defined by the No Child Left Behind Act; and programs will be required to establish "programs of study," or plans for integrating academic- and career-oriented courses leading to a degree or industry certification.  A copy of the law (Public Law No. 109-270) is not yet available through the Government Printing Office.

Two New Reports from Chapin Hall

Exploring How Children React in Bullying Situations explores what factors influenced sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-grade students’ reactions in bullying situations. Researchers found that most students joined in bullying or withdrew from bullying situations, rather than defended victims.  In Teen Perspectives on After-School Programs, researchers interviewed 10th graders to gather their perspectives on out-of-school opportunities and how to improve such programs through outreach and access. Our Colleagues Write

Three CEOs of National Assembly member organizations have recently published books that are well worth reading.  Who knew?  One’s a mystery, reflecting the avocation of the author.  Another aligns directly with the author’s day job.  The third, a memoir, is personal but explains a lot about his choice of careers as well as his path in life.  Here’s a “byte” about each:

Unforgiving Shadows, by Ray Flynt, Day Job:  President, Traveler’s Aid International.  No longer an amateur writer, Ray has penned a book about a Main Line Philadelphia resident jolted out of his complacency by the kidnap and murder of his mother and sister, embarking on a journey to solve the mystery, changing his life forever.

Points of Light, A Celebration of the American Spirit of Giving.  No mystery here:  the author is and has to be, Robert Goodwin, President & CEO of the Points of Light Foundation.  Illustrated by the famed artist, Thomas Kinkade, this book shares the stories of people who demonstrate America’s culture of caring.

Mama’s Boy, Preacher’s Son: A Memoir, by Kevin Jennings, Day Job:  Executive Director (and Founder), GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network).  From evangelical, trailer park roots and the unyielding sting of the term, “faggot,” to Harvard, private school educator, founder of gay-straight student alliances, and pride in his individuality, the author shares his challenging journey with both humor and drama.

These books can be purchased through the Assembly’s link to Amazon.com by clicking here.
