Heartland Film Festival and NCY will continue the collaboration on its Truly Moving Pictures partnership with help from this endowment. This initiative will provide many great opportunities for NCY member agencies and their affiliates. New Report Describes the Impact of Children's Severe Emotional or Behavioral Difficulties

A new report from the Division of Health Interview Statistics of the National Center for Health Statistics describes the socio-demographic characteristics, mental health service use, and impact of emotional and behavioral difficulties on children. The findings use data from the 2001, 2002, and 2003 National Health Interview Surveys and are based on parent reports. For more, click here.

Brief Emphasizes Need for Recognition of Engagement in Volunteering Among Older Adults

This brief by the Urban Institute examines the types and intensity of engagement among adults age 55 and older using data from the 2002 Health and Retirement Study. The results show high levels of engagement, with 80 percent of older adults participating in formal or informal volunteer work, paid work, or caregiving. While engagement varies by age group, activity, and personal characteristics, older engaged Americans contribute an average of 1,300 hours annually to the above activities. The authors conclude with a discussion of the implications of the findings and recommendations for different initiatives that could further increase engagement. For more, click here.

Nonprofits Face Difficulty Filling Top Posts

Even as the number of nonprofit organizations in the United States continues to grow, the supply of nonprofit executives qualified to fill top leadership and development jobs at those organizations is getting tighter, the Wall Street Journal recently reported. According to Independent Sector about 278,000 nonprofit groups were formed between 1997 and 2003. But a wave of retirements at the executive level, a trend likely to continue as more and more baby boomers reach retirement age, and increased pressure on acting executives from boards of directors made wary by media and congressional scrutiny of the sector are resulting in high turnover rates. Advertising of Physical Activity Makes Children Exercise More

An article in the August 2005 edition of Pediatrics, describes how advertising of physical activity makes children exercise more. Started in 2002 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, VERB used commercial marketing methods to portray physical activity as cool and fun, with television advertising on cable channels (e.g., Nickelodeon and Disney) as the primary vehicle. The campaign chose the word VERB as the brand, because it is associated with action. Seventy-four percent of surveyed children were aware of the messages at the end of the campaign. Based on parents' reports, the average 9 to 10 year old child who was aware of the campaign was engaged in 34 percent more free-time physical activity sessions per week than those who were unaware of the campaign. Local Organizations Can Now Apply to Join Youth Policy Action Center

The National Collaboration for Youth, along with over 30 other national organizations, helped create and launch the Youth Policy Action Center, which has dramatically increased the number of messages constituents send to Congress about youth issues. In the past six weeks alone the website has received over 375,000 hits from over 30,000 visitors, who sent thousands of messages to Members of Congress! Having demonstrated its value to national organizations, the Youth Policy Action Center is now opening up its membership to state and local organizations. Applications are due September 15, 2005. NMHA Urges Advocates to Promote Medicaid & Other Mental Health Funding During August Recess

The National Mental Health Association encouraged advocates to meet with Members of Congress during the August recess to emphasize the importance of Medicaid to people with mental illness and to urge Members to oppose any changes that will harm those who need support from this vital program. Mental health advocates are also calling on Congress to pass mental health parity legislation; reject Association Health Plan legislation pending in the Senate; provide initial funding to implement a new law to de-criminalize mental illness; and maintain and, if possible, increase federal funding for needed programs and services for people with or at risk of mental illness. House Minority Lawmakers Call for Protection of Food Stamp Program

On August 1, the Congressional Black Caucus, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, and the board of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus urged House Agriculture Committee leaders to protect the Food Stamp Program in this year's budget reconciliation process. The Agriculture Committee needs to make $3 billion in overall cuts and the signers of the letter favor limiting cuts to the Food Stamp Program to 7% if it must be cut at all. However, some agriculture groups favor making 60% of the overall cuts from food stamp and other nutrition programs. For more information, click here. (Source: Food Research and Action Center )

Coalition Urges Senate to Save the Estate Tax

Americans for a Fair Estate Tax, a coalition of more than 160 national and state organizations, sent a letter to all U.S. Senators on July 26 to urge them to reject any "compromise" that would gut the estate tax and strip the essential revenue and incentives to charitable giving it provides. The letter points out the costs of estate tax repeal both to the federal government and the charitable sector, which are estimated at as much as $1 trillion in lost federal revenue over 10 years and $25 billion per year in lost donations to charities and nonprofits.
