Where National Human Service Leaders Gather

September 19, 2007

1:00-8:00 P.M.

National Housing Center

Washington, DC

Don't miss this opportunity to learn about two bold poverty-reduction strategies!

Both Catholic Charities USA and the United Way of America have launched efforts to meet the challenge of significantly reducing poverty in America. Catholic Charities USA's "Campaign to Reduce Poverty in America," cites poverty as a threat to the common good and proposes policies that provide good jobs and wages, social program supports, and life-long learning.   United Way of America's financial stability partnership outlines a pathway to strengthening families, engaging business, government, and the nonprofit sector to get people on the road to economic success. Our keynote speakers,  Rev. Larry Snyder, President of Catholic Charities USA, and Alex Sanchez, Senior Vice President for Community Impact at United Way of America will discuss "Strengthening Families and Reducing Poverty:  Can We Achieve Both?"

For more information about the summit, including workshops, Essence of Leadership Awards, and how to register, click here.

Tax Credit Fails to Promote Adoption of Foster Children

Understanding TANF and the Hard-to-Employ

Sixty-nine percent of those who recently left welfare and 56 percent of those who have no welfare history, receive no government assistance, are out of work, and face more than one barrier to employment. The Urban Institute's, Hard to Employ Parents: A Review of Their Characteristics and the Programs Designed to Serve Their Needs, revues how the entire set of safety-net services works for hard-to-employ parents, and seeks to address key questions. In addition, a related report, TANF Policies for the Hard to Employ: Understanding State Approaches and Future Direction summarizes states’ approaches to serving this population in fall 2006, and the changes states anticipate in the near future to help recipients move into work and off the caseload.

Senate Seeking Information About Intergenerational Families

Senator Gordon Smith (R-OR), the Ranking Senator on the Senate Special Committee on Aging, is seeking information about intergenerational families for a report that would highlight the successes and challenges faced by grandfamilies, provide an overview of state and federal laws and resources, and inspire state and federal officials to ensure that intergenerational families have the support they need. For more information or to contribute information, recommendations, or stories for this report, click here. The deadline is September 10, 2007.

Talking About Youth Transitions: Making the Case
What's the best way to reach policymakers, parents, law enforcement and others with a message about what young people need to transition to adulthood? The Youth Transition Funders Group and Fenton Communications have created a toolkit to help advocates develop strong core messages.

Interested in putting positive youth development concepts to work?

On February 27-29, 2008, Building Partnerships for Youth will kick off a year-long professional development experience for people with state-level responsibility or oversight for programs that positively impact the well-being of young people.
