Study Calculates Economic Cost of Hunger

The cost burden of hunger in the United States is a minimum of $90 billion annually, or $300 for each person living in the U.S., according to a new report from researchers at Harvard, Brandeis, and Loyola Universities commissioned by the Sodexho Foundation.  This includes the costs of charitable efforts to feed hungry Americans, the costs of hunger-related illness and psychosocial dysfunction, and the societal cost burden of less education and lower productivity.

Nonprofits Face Challenges and Opportunities With Baby-Boomer Retirements

A new report from The Conference Board explores the challenges and opportunities in managing an aging workforce in nonprofit organizations, and examines major research conducted over the past five years on key trends and issues concerning the mature workforce in nonprofits.

Meeting the Long-Term Care Needs of Baby Boomers

This Urban Institute study projects to 2040 the number of people ages 65 and older with disabilities and their use of long-term care services.  Even under the most optimistic scenario, long-term care burdens on families and institutions will increase substantially.

Financing Programs for Youth Transitioning Out of Foster Care

The Finance Project recently developed three strategy briefs that explore the players, funding sources, and financing strategies that can support entrepreneurship opportunities, asset-building and financial education programs, and workforce development programs and services for youth in or transitioning from foster care.

Hispanics, African Americans at Risk for High Drug Costs

A new study from AARP finds Hispanics and African Americans often delay filling a prescription or skip doses because of the high costs of their medications. The impact of employer-provided insurance, government-funded coverage or no insurance coverage is highlighted throughout the study.  (Sources: AARP & Access to Benefits Coalition)

A new paper from the William T. Grant Foundation argues that the primary issue facing the after-school field is learning how to intervene effectively to improve programs and provides new information on the features of effective programs.  It also includes discussion on the implications of this new information for program accountability and the selection of student outcomes to guide programming.

Appropriations Process Steams Ahead

The House Appropriations Committee approved 302(b) budget allocations, which determine discretionary spending levels available to each appropriations subcommittee, and allowed the subcommittees to begin “marking up” the 13 bills that fund the federal government.  The appropriations bill that contains many human service and youth development programs, the Labor-HHS-Ed bill, was marked up by the subcommittee on June 7.  There were several small victories as many of our sector’s priorities received much better marks than proposed by the Administration, and a few received modest funding increases.  Senate action on appropriations is scheduled to begin soon.  To follow appropriations action in Congress, visit the House of Representatives and Senate Web sites.

Education Begins At Home Act

The Education Begins At Home Act is bipartisan legislation that would provide federal funding to expand quality early childhood home visitation programs. Early childhood home visiting promotes early learning, improves parenting and family health, and ensures that children grow up ready to learn.  EBAH was introduced in the Senate by Senators Bond (R-MO) and Clinton (D-NY) and the House version was introduced by Reps. Davis (D-IL) and Platts (R-PA).  To learn more about EBAH, and take action to increase Congressional support, click here.
