Help Honor The "Best in Class"
You know them:  the national CEO who has moved mountains to improve services; the board leader who bridges boundaries to get things done; the media person whose coverage of pressing human service issues made a difference.  The National Assembly invites you to nominate your candidates for these honors--The Essence of Leadership Awards.  The nominating process is fairly simple; you can read about it by clicking here.

Nearly Half Of U.S. Children Under 5 Are Minorities

Nearly half of the nation's children under 5 are racial or ethnic minorities, and the percentage is increasing mainly because the Hispanic population is growing so rapidly, according to a new census report. In some suburban communities, government officials face a cultural generation gap as they weigh demands from older white residents for senior-citizen centers, transportation and other aid against requests from younger, mainly minority residents for translation assistance, preschools and other services. Experts say immigrant families are becoming more concerned with the quality of their children's early education, aware that it can affect their future academic success. For more, click here.

NFTE Featured in New York Times Article

Steve Mariotti and the organization he founded, the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE), were profiled in in the May 1 edition of the New York Times.   The article explains how Mariotti was inspired to create NFTE because students in his South Bronx classrooms were more interested in learning about his practical business experience than the traditional classroom lessons. Access the full report by clicking here.

GLSEN Announces National School Climate Survey Findings

The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) worked with Harris Interactive to conduct a national survey to document the experiences of students who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) in America's schools. The survey reveals that anti-LGBT bullying and harassment remain commonplace in America's schools, with impact on academic success.  LGBT students were twice as likely as the general population of students to report they were not planning to pursue any post-secondary education. On a positive note, the report indicates that trained and supportive staff, the presence of Gay Student Alliance clubs, and anti-bullying policies all lead to reductions in harassment.  Read the full report by clicking here.
