Center Addresses Foreclosure Crisis

Rising foreclosure rates affect many of the people who utilize the services of human service agencies. The NeighborWorks® Center for Foreclosure Solutions, an initiative of NeighborWorks® America, provides training and certification to foreclosure counselors, conducts public outreach campaigns to reach struggling homeowners, and researches local and national trends to develop innovative solutions.

Clearinghouse on Expanding and Sustaining Youth Programs and Policies

The Finance Project and The Forum for Youth Investment launched this online clearinghouse to help leaders make smart decisions and sound policies to improve the lives of children, families and communities.  Users can search for data, tools, policies, practices, financing strategies, coordination efforts and technical assistance resources developed by organizations in the field.

Report Features State Rankings of Volunteering and Civic Life

Volunteering in America: 2007 State Trends and Rankings in Civic Life is the second annual study by the Corporation for National and Community Service that gives a detailed breakdown of America’s volunteering habits and patterns by state and region. The report also provides the agency’s first-ever ranking of levels of civic engagement by state through a new Civic Life Index.

Campaign Promotes Early Learning Opportunities for Young Children

Born Learning is a public education campaign that helps parents, grandparents, and caregivers explore ways to turn everyday moments into fun learning opportunities.  The campaign, a project of United Way of America in partnership with the Ad Council, Civitas and Families and Work Institute, also provides information about how young children learn and a visible platform for public policy and action.

Report Assesses Condition of African-American Community

The National Urban League released its annual State of Black America report, with a special focus on black males.  The report’s Equality Index provides a statistical measurement of the disparities or equality gaps that exist between African Americans and whites across five different categories: economics, education, health, civic engagement and social justice.

Breaking the Cycle of Child Maltreatment and Family Violence

Healthy Teen Network recently released three new publications that address issues of child maltreatment, interpersonal violence, and family violence in order to promote healthy behaviors and relationships among youth. 

Paper Offers New Approach To Civic Engagement

Getting citizens more involved in the civic life and health of their communities must begin with citizens themselves, according to a paper from the Case Foundation.  Based on interviews with researchers and experts in service/civic engagement, politics, and marketing, the paper offers specific recommendations for giving citizens the tools they need to identify problems and develop solutions.

Web Site to Help People with Vision Loss Maintain Independence

The American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) launched a new, totally accessible, multimedia Web site that offers instructional videos, easy to implement tips and testimonials to help this country's growing low vision population maintain independence.  AFB also released the results of a national opinion poll that details people's fears about vision loss. 

Women Struggle More with High Cost of Health Care

Although both men and women in the U.S. have a similar risk of being uninsured, women are more likely to have problems accessing health care because of costs, according to a new Commonwealth Fund issue brief.  The study finds that 33 percent of insured women and 68 percent of uninsured women don't get the health care they need because they can't afford it.

Free Materials on Internet Safety for Children

Protect Every Child has developed a DVD to educate parents and young people about the dangers that exist in online Chat Rooms.  A leader's guide, brochures and information about Internet safety can be used for delivering presentations.

House Holds Multiple Hearings on Education and Volunteering

The House Education and Labor Committee has held several recent hearings covering Supplemental Education Services, Dropout Prevention and School Safety, and Service – all topics covered by the National Collaboration for Youth’s proposal to improve No Child Left Behind and help ensure healthy youth, connected youth and healthy and connected families.  Testimony and additional information on witnesses may be viewed at the following links:

Juvenile Justice Programs Assessment Released

The performance of the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention's (OJJDP's) Juvenile Justice Programs was recently rated under the federal government's Program Assessment Rating Tool (PART) system. Results of the assessment indicate that OJJDP's Juvenile Justice Programs are performing with an overall rating of "adequate." The assessment notes that the programs “compare favorably with other programs focusing on juveniles, delinquency, and crime.”

Information for Action: A Journal for Service-Learning Research with Children and Youth seeks papers that contribute new research, theory, pedagogy, and other matters related to service-learning in school and community settings that affect youth, ages 5-18.

Grants Support Youth Community Service and Social Entrepreneurship

Deadline: May 14, 2007

Youth Service America and Youth Venture provide funding and support to young people (ages 12-20) who want to create new, sustainable, civic-minded organizations, clubs or businesses called Ventures.

Grants for Gender Violence Protection

Deadline: May 24, 2007

The Ms. Foundation for Women is seeking proposals from grassroots groups on community-driven strategies that  challenge gender violence on a systemic level, child sexual abuse/incest prevention, and prevention strategies that transform gender roles.

Funding for Enrichment and Accelerated Learning Programs for Children

Deadline: June 1, 2007 (Invited proposals)

The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation seeks nonprofit providers of accelerated-learning or academic-  enrichment programs for low- to moderate-income students between the ages of 5 and 12.  Proposals are solicited by invitation only; organizations that have not received an invitation are required to first submit a letter of interest.

Youth Prizes for Excellence in International Education

Deadline: June 11, 2007

The Goldman Sachs Foundation and Asia Society award high school students who demonstrate an in-depth understanding of key issues in international affairs and the global economy.

Grants for Grassroots Programs that Address Root Causes of Poverty

Deadline: June 15, 2007

World Hunger Year's Harry Chapin Self-Reliance Awards program distributes cash grants to grassroots organizations for innovative and creative approaches to fighting domestic hunger and poverty by empowering people and building self-reliance.

Grants to Engage Youth in Science and Technology

Deadline: June 15, 2007

The Motorola Foundation will provide $3.5 million in Innovation Generation grants to U.S. initiatives that inspire young people, particularly girls and underserved minorities, to embrace science, technology, engineering, and math.

Help Identify Unique Community Integration Programs for People with Mental Illness

The UPenn Collaborative on Community Integration is looking for innovative programs/initiatives that help to promote community integration of individuals with psychiatric disabilities.  They are particularly
interested in efforts undertaken by non-mental health agencies, such as religious organizations, community centers, child welfare agencies, mainstream employment programs, colleges/universities, employers, housing communities, local clubs or groups, etc.
