New Website to Help Develop High Quality After-School Programs

Communities In Schools recently announced the launch of a new website, funded by MetLife Foundation, that will provide resources for professionals in the education sector who wish to run sustainable, high quality after-school programs.  On this site, users can access the information they need to build an after-school program that is designed to produce measurable outcomes in student achievement.  Users can also identify the core components recommended for success in specialized math and reading enrichment programs and learn about model programs.   For more information, click here.

Search Institute Launches New Campaign for Parents

Search Institute recently launched MVParents, a campaign that provides parents with tools, encouragement, and information to support them in being the most valuable players in their children's lives. The campaign will include both a national television spot featuring Hall of Fame NFL players and a Web site.   For more information, visit www.mvparents.com.

Financially Active Teens Unaware of the Implications of Their Spending Habits
One of the key findings of the annual Charles Schwab Foundation survey Teens & Money is that teens are growing increasingly more active as financial consumers and have strong fundamental values about money, but are in urgent need of learning more of the ABCs of money management to temper their new forays into the world of credit and debt.  For more information and to see the results of this survey, click here. Report on "Learning Foundations"
Learning for Community Change: Core Components of Foundations That Learn, a report prepared by the Chapin Hall Center for Children with funding from the Annie E. Chart Summarizes Collaborative Efforts to Improve Child Welfare

Home at Last has created an online tool, Pursuing Foster Care Reform—State Court Commissions and Task Forces, that examines efforts under way in 15 states and the District of Columbia to ensure the courts and child welfare agencies responsible for children in foster care work together to improve the lives of and outcomes for these children. Home at Last is a national, nonpartisan education and outreach project that seeks to encourage action on the recommendations of the Pew Commission on Children in Foster Care.

Supplemental Report on Nonprofits Released

The Panel of the Nonprofit Sector released a supplement to the Final Report it issued last year. The Supplemental Report focuses on nine areas, including international grantmaking and charitable solicitation, with recommendations incorporated from across the realm of the charitable community.  The new report can be downloaded from www.NonprofitPanel.org.

Convention on the Rights of the Child

The Campaign for Ratification of the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) will hold its first national summit in the United States, May 18-20, at American University in Washington, DC. The purpose of the summit is to educate and mobilize support for the ratification of the CRC by the United States. To learn more or register for the event, click here.

$1,000 "Bee" the Change Community Service Grant Available to Increase Literacy

Youth Service America and Lionsgate recently announced the "Bee" the Change Community Service Grant for literacy. This grant opportunity offers $1,000 to one young person between the ages of 5-25 to implement a sustainable community service project that increases literacy in their community and uses the movie, Akeelah and the Bee, in theatres April 28th, as inspiration. Projects should be youth-led and created, and must have a portion of their project take place on National and Global Youth Service Day (April 20-22, 2007).  Deadline is June 9, 2006. Grantmakers In Aging Accepting Proposals for Hurricane Fund for the Elderly
Up to $100,000 is available to nonprofit organizations for projects to re-establish the older adult service system in areas affected by the 2005 hurricanes. This grant has a rolling deadline.

Avon Foundation Offers Support for Local and Regional Domestic Violence Organizations
Up to $25,000 will be awarded to community-based nonprofits providing essential services to domestic violence victims in specific geographic areas of the United States. Deadline: August 1, 2006

In-Kind Services Grant for Cause Marketing Campaign
The Bemporad Baranowski Marketing Group will donate in-kind services worth $100,000 to a U.S. nonprofit and its corporate partner for creation and launch of a cause marketing campaign.  Deadline: July 31, 2006

Grants for Programs Serving At-Risk Youth
The Louis R. Cappelli Foundation will provide grants of up to $25,000 to organizations whose programs for at-risk youth focus on education, health and fitness, or arts education.  Deadline: June 30, 2006

National Collaboration for Youth
New Version of Youth Policy Action Center
On April 18, the National Collaboration for Youth joined more than 80 of the country's leading national, state, and local advocacy organizations to launch the redesigned Youth Policy Action Center, a website that helps youth and adults contact their elected officials about child and youth issues.  The new version of the site features state pages, policy tools, and an information portal so visitors can learn about the issues and the policy making process before taking action. For more information, visit www.youthpolicyactioncenter.org.

F.I.L.M. - Finding Inspiration in Literature & Movies
Hoot Activity Guide and Service Supplement Now Available
F.I.L.M. (Finding Inspiration in Literature & Movies) is pleased to offer two new resources as part of the latest program around the book and upcoming movie, Hoot.  The three steps of completion for the Hoot program include reading the book and seeing the movie, participating in activities from the activity guide, and completing a related service project.  The youth development activity guide, entitled Hoot: Speak Up and Give Back is now available for free download on the F.I.L.M. website.  Designed for youth ages 9 -15, this guide pulls out positive themes from Hoot, such as environmental activism, standing up for oneself and others against bullying, and learning how to advocate for issues of importance. To download the guide, click here. A new service-learning supplement is also now available to assist youth and facilitators in the planning and implementation of their service projects. Although the guide was geared for use on National & Global Youth Service Day 2006 (April 21-23), it can be used throughout the year for any service-related event.  To download the free supplement, simply click here.  Remember, Hoot opens in theaters nationwide on Friday May 5, 2006.
