Daring to Lead 2006 - A National Study of Nonprofit Executive Leadership
Daring to Lead 2006, a national study conducted by CompassPoint Nonprofit Services and the Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer Foundation, surveyed executive directors of nonprofits about their career paths, likely tenure, management teams, and challenges and frustrations. The study found that a third of executives leave their jobs involuntarily (either fired or forced out); executive directors plan to leave their jobs within the next five years but will stay active in the nonprofit sector; and a key driver of executive burnout is frustration with funders. To download a PDF copy of the report, visit www.compasspoint.org/daringtolead2006. [Source: Alliance for Nonprofit Management]

Just Out focuses of Ready4Work's 11 adult sites. It offers practical advice about recruitment, case management, mentoring and employment, and documents early lessons in this growing area of study, policy and advocacy. Download the report here. Students Get National Attention for School Photographs & Advocacy Efforts
Two students from Washington, DC were featured on The Oprah Winfrey Show and CNN's Anderson Cooper 360 this week for their efforts to photograph conditions in their public school and advocate for improvements.  The students were part of a project coordinated by Critical Exposure, a nonprofit organization that provides public school students with cameras, training in documentary photography and advocacy, and an opportunity to use their skills and images to secure a high-quality education for all children.  For more information, visit www.criticalexposure.org.

Child Well-Being Report Shows Mixed Results
The 2006 Child and Youth Well-Being Index, a new 30 year study on child well-being by the Foundation for Child Development, paints a mixed picture for America's youth.  Education achievement for younger children is offset by flat or declining numbers for older youth.  However, other behavioral indicators tracked by the study demonstrate improvement, such as declines in teenage birth rates, drinking and drug use, and criminal activity. The study also revealed that children were more likely to attend preschool, get college degrees, and be politically active than their parents' generation. Read the full report here.

Urban Institute Publishes Report on Working Families Who Remain Low-Income

Parents and Children Facing a World of Risk: "Next Steps toward a Working Families' Agenda" Roundtable lays out the salient points of the two-day roundtable and the thrust of a future agenda.  Read the full report here.

Did You Know?
What Does D&O Insurance Cover?
D&O insurance is the generic name given to insurance designed originally to cover Directors and Officers of publicly traded companies.  Over the years coverage has evolved to protect nonprofits as well as privately held companies.  Coverage provided to nonprofits is usually broader and more inclusive than coverage provided to both public and private for profit companies.  The Lighthouse NonProfit D&O policy provides coverage for the wrongful acts of Directors, Officers, employees and the organization.  In addition it provides employment practices liability insurance (EPLI).  EPLI covers the directors, officers and the organization for damages resulting from employment perils such as wrongful termination, discrimination, sexual harassment and other perils.
