Volunteering Among Disadvantaged Youth

In Leveling the Path to Participation, the Corporation for National and Community Service reports

that youth from disadvantaged circumstances are less likely than other youth to experience

service-learning, but are more likely to participate if asked by a teacher.  Researchers also found

that the disparity between disadvantaged youth and those from non-disadvantaged circumstances regarding the belief in obtaining a four-year college degree decreased when youth from disadvantaged circumstances volunteer.

Fiscal Year 2008 Budget

The House and Senate, prior to leaving for spring break (one week for the Senate, two for the House) passed budget resolutions, both promising to balance the budget by 2012 while modestly increasing domestic discretionary spending.  The House and Senate bills differ on the amount of the increases, taxes and budget rules.  While members have been working in the districts, House and Senate staff have been meeting in hopes of reconciling differences and allowing for passage of a joint budget resolution by the end of April or first week of May.  For actions the National Human Services Assembly has taken on the Budget, click here.

Senate Introduces T-FELAS Act

Teaching Fellows for Expanded Learning and After-School Act of 2007, or T-FELAS, was recently introduced as Senate Bill 778.  This bi-partisan bill, co-sponsored by Senators Kennedy (D-MA) and Burr (R-NC), would establish a program to train and place youth workers and educators into afterschool programs to help continue to increase the quality of afterschool programs, and to create a talent pipeline for those interested in working with children and youth outside of the classroom.  To view the legislation, visit THOMASClick here to view the letter of support from the National Collaboration for Youth, and visit the Next Generation Youth Work Coalition for more information on building a skilled youth development workforce.
