Sign on as a Supporting Organization of the Federal Youth Coordination Act
If you have 30 seconds, you can show your organizational support for the Federal Youth Coordination Act by filling out a simple form at www.youthcoordinationact.org .  You can also send an e-mail or fax to urge your Representative and Senators to support the Act.  This bipartisan legislation, which was introduced in Congress on February 16, establishes a Federal Youth Development Council to improve communication among federal agencies serving youth, assess their needs, set goals for helping them and establish best practices for improving services.  For more information, CLICK HERE

Generations United Launches Website on Social Security and Youth

To inform the current debate over Social Security, Generations United (GU) is partnering with youth-serving organizations and coalitions to provide non-partisan and unbiased information about how the program currently benefits America 's children, youth, and families, and the impact particular changes may have on current and future generations.  GU's new website, socialsecurity4youth.org, includes fact sheets, links to resources, and will feature contests for youth on topics such as “What Social Security Means to My Family.” For more information, visit www.socialsecurity4youth.org

The Forum for Youth Investment Releases the "Investing in Youth Poll"
Results from this national and city-level poll show that adults place a high priority on after-school, job training, service-learning, recreation, arts and health care programs ahead of other concerns, with 45 percent of respondents nationally saying these programs are a very high priority. At the city level, this support is even higher, ranging from 78 percent to 62 percent. Support for both tax increases on high-income taxpayers and for community trust funds to pay for services for young people was surprisingly strong (66 percent favor the tax increases and 78 percent favor the trust funds nationally).

Afterschool Alliance Releases New Report

The Afterschool Alliance released a new report on March, 3, 2005 just as lawmakers announced a new Afterschool Caucus. For more on the caucus see PolicyBytes. Third Arts Olympiad (2005-2008)

The Arts Olympiad, sponsored by the International Child Art Foundation is the world's largest and most prestigious initiative to build bonds of trust and understanding between children. The Arts Olympiad is a four year program that commences with lesson plans that lead to school art competitions on a universal theme. Local, national and regional exhibitions and festivals follow. These events lead to a world festival held on the National Mall in Washington, DC.

The American Camp Association Launches Family Web Site and Magazine

The American Camp Association recently announced the launch of two major family initiatives: CAMP: A Resource for Families —an annual family magazine and www.CampParents.org , comprehensive online resource for parents who want their children to benefit from a positive camp experience.

AFB to Research Physical Activity Among People with Disabilities

The American Foundation for the Blind recently announced a new study funded by an 18-month, $100,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation through its Active Living Research national program. The study will research physical activity levels among people with disabilities, seeking to uncover how environment impacts exercise.

Nonprofit Panel Proposes Actions to Strengthen Accountability of Charities

The Panel on the Nonprofit Sector's Interim Report to the U.S. Senate Finance Committee calls upon the nation's 1.3 million charities and foundations to implement a series of measures to improve their governance and financial disclosure. The Panel is encouraging nonprofit organizations to consider signing on to the report in order to show the sector's commitment to the highest possible ethical standards. Lawmakers Form Congressional Afterschool Caucuses
Members of Congress on March 3 announced that they have established the first-ever Afterschool Caucuses in the Senate and House of Representatives to raise public awareness about the need for more afterschool programs and increase resources for quality afterschool care. Senators Christopher Dodd (D-CT) and John Ensign (R-NV) and Representatives Nita Lowey (D-NY) and Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) will serve as co-chairs of the bipartisan Caucuses. Governors Release Reports on Medicaid and High School Reform

The National Governors Association (NGA) at its recent Winter Meeting released Medicaid in 2005: Principles & Proposals for Reform . This paper looks at the issues, problems and challenges that face Medicaid in 2005, the outlook for the future, and offers principles and options for reform. Also at the meeting, Virginia Gov. Mark Warner, as part of his initiative as NGA chairman, released a guidebook that offers a series of best practices and achievable policy actions governors can use to get started on high school reform in the next 12 to 18 months. Supreme Court Abolishes Juvenile Death Penalty

The U.S. Supreme Court on March 1 ruled that the execution of 16- and 17-year-olds violates the Constitution's Eighth Amendment ban on cruel and unusual punishment. As a result of the court's decision, 73 people will be taken off death row and states cannot seek to execute minors for future crimes. Various organizations representing child advocacy, scientific, international, religious, legal, and other communities expressed their opposition to the juvenile death penalty by filing amicus briefs in the case.

Mutual of America Community Partnership Award Nominations

Mutual of America recently announced the 2005 Community Partnership Award competition, which recognizes and encourages partnerships dedicated to the public good among business, government and social sector organizations. The award guidelines are available by clicking here. To enter the 2005 competition, complete the application and return it by April 1, 2005

American Honda Foundation
The American Honda Foundation makes grants to K-12 schools, colleges, universities, trade schools, and other youth-focused nonprofit organizations for programs that benefit youth and scientific education. Maximum Award: $10,000 -$100,000. Deadline: Grant applications are accepted four times per year: Nov. 1, Feb. 1, May 1, and Aug. 1.

Assisting At-Risk Youth
The Home Depot Foundation gives cash and materials to help provide young people with safe places to play and learn, leadership programs that teach skills through community engagement, and job readiness training. Maximum Award: Up to $25,000 Eligibility: Schools and districts. Deadline: Applications are considered four times a year.

Stanford School of Business and Amazon Grant

The Stanford School of Business recently announced that the Stanford Center for Social Innovation and Amazon.com are launching a Nonprofit Innovation Award. The $1 million award recognizes and rewards nonprofit organizations whose innovative approaches most effectively improve their communities or the world at large.

Teleconferencing Series

The Child Welfare League of America's 2005 Teleconference Series includes five sessions from January to May on child trauma.  Specifically, they will focus on the developmental impact of child trauma; how knowledge of child trauma can enhance child welfare practice in various settings, such as schools and residential treatment centers; and evidence-based child trauma interventions that can be used to treat child sexual abuse.

The Points of Light Foundation offers teleconferences on a myriad of topics relevant to volunteer practitioners.
