Good to Great Author Discusses New Monograph for Social Sector
A recent Bridgespan exclusive interview with Jim Collins is featured in the February 2006 edition of Leadership Matters, a publication of the Alliance for Children and Families.  In the interview, Collins discusses his new monograph Good to Great and the Social Sectors: a Monograph to Accompany Good to Great and shares his thoughts on topics related to nonprofit leadership, the nature of leadership in the nonprofit sector, and the advantages nonprofits have in attracting great people. For more information, click here. Number of Nonprofits Grew by Two-Thirds Between 1993 and 2003

The number of nonprofit organizations in the United States grew by 68 percent between 1993 and 2003, according to new report from National Council of Nonprofit Associations finds. Based on the most current statistics available on America's nonprofit sector, the United States Nonprofit Sector found that, excluding foundations and religious congregations, there were 837,027 nonprofits in the United States in 2003, and that they had combined assets of $1.76 trillion. Profile of Frail Older Americans and Their Caregivers

The Urban Institute recently released a new report entitled Profile of Frail and Older Americans and Their Caregivers. This report uses data from the 2002 Health and Retirement Study (HRS) to profile older Americans and their caregivers. Focusing on people age 65 and older who are not in nursing homes, the study examines frail older adults and the subgroup with severe disabilities. For more information, click here.

Report Gives Voice to Dropouts
The Silent Epidemic: Perspectives of High School Dropouts

released by Civic Enterprises and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation focuses on the perspectives of high school dropouts. The central message is that while some students drop out because of significant academic challenges, most dropouts are students who could have, and believe they could have, succeeded in school.  To read the report, click here.

Low-Income Children Are at Health, Developmental, and Educational Disadvantage

The Health and Well-Being of Children: A Portrait of States and the Nation 2005 highlights the major findings of the 2003 first National Survey of Children’s Health, released by the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. The book includes many positive findings about American children, but it also reports on conditions of children who are particularly vulnerable to health risks, such as children in low-income families. IRS Releases Report on Political Activities and Guidance for Non-Profits
The IRS released a report containing results of examinations of potential political intervention by nonprofits in the 2004 election cycle and new guidance for the 2006 election cycle. The report includes detailed examples of the types of activities that triggered IRS audits in 2004. In connection with the report, the IRS is also unveiling new procedures for the 2006 election season, which provide additional guidance to charities regarding political activities.  Read the report and the guidance for 2006 activity by clicking here

Study Shows Less Federal Money Going to Faith-Based Organizations

A new study finds that the dollar total of direct federal grants to faith-based organizations declined from 2002 to 2004.  Conducted by the Roundtable on Religion and Social Welfare Policy, the study examined 28,000 grants made by nine federal agencies over three years.  Read the full report by clicking here

Working Group on National and Community Service

Youth Service America (YSA) announces the Working Group on National and Community Service, providing a cohesive voice for the youth service and learning field.  The next meeting will discuss and work to develop effective strategies for engaging foster care youth in community service.  Foster care youth are a tremendous untapped community resource who are often viewed as a group needing services rather than community assets and resources.  The next meeting is March 13 from 1 – 3 pm.  Contact Robert Bisi at rbisi@ysa.org.  For more information about Youth Service America, visit www.ysa.org.

National Crime Prevention Council Offers Grants for Youth Service Learning Projects
One hundred grants of up to $500 will be awarded to support service-learning projects planned and implemented by youth to address or prevent crime, violence, or drug abuse in their schools and communities. Deadline: April 1, 2006 and June 1, 2006

Independent Sector Accepting Nominations for Leadership IS Award
The award recognizes an organization that incorporates the development of future leaders in its policies and daily operations, and places an emphasis on staff, board, and volunteer development. Deadline: March 10, 2006

Grants Target Poverty Issues
The mission of the Charles Stewart Mott Foundation is to support efforts that promote a just, equitable, and sustainable society. One of the Foundation's four program areas, Pathways Out of Poverty, seeks to address reduction in poverty rates for low-income people and communities in the U.S. The program focuses on improving community education; expanding economic opportunity; and building organized communities. Youth Activist Projects Supported
The Mix It Up Grants Program, administered by the Southern Poverty Law Center, funds youth-directed activist projects that focus on identifying, crossing and challenging social boundaries in schools and communities. Deadline: Ongoing

Family Strengthening Policy Center
FSPC to Present at Family Support America Conference
The Family Strengthening Policy Center is presenting at Family Support America's 25th Anniversary Conference in Chicago, March 26-29, 2006.   The conference will focus on uniting family support, prevention and community-based efforts to support and strengthen families.  There will be over 150 workshops, symposia, institutes, and dialogues representing multiple tracks including policy and advocacy, child welfare, parenting, research and evaluation, child development, fatherhood, health, and more.  For more information, click here.   

F.I.L.M. - Finding Inspiration in Literature & Movies
F.I.L.M. Gains Visibility at the CWLA Conference
This past week, from February 27 – March 1, F.I.L.M. FILM Exhibitexhibited at the Child Welfare League of America’s (CWLA) national conference, entitled Children 2006: Securing Brighter Futures.
