CVENT - New National Assembly Business Partner The National Assembly recently announced a new business partnerhip with CVENT, the online event management company. CVENT offers web-based event management, event registration, surveys, email marketing and group housing/travel solutions. Online Auction to Help People, Communities in Need Lutheran Services in America (LSA) is sponsoring the second annual Trading Graces online auction on eBay from February 25 through March 22, 2007. Proceeds will benefit Lutheran health and human service organizations nationwide. Items range across the spectrum of eBay categories and include many high-quality items. Older People Most Generous, Poll Finds An AARP poll of 930 people 18 and older asking about charitable donations discovered that older people are the most generous. Ten percent of adults aged 65 or older donated $5,000 or more to charities last year. The next biggest group of large contributors was 35-49 (9%), followed by 50-64 year olds (7%). In 2005 Americans gave over $260 billion, an increase of almost 3% over 2004. This surge was attributed, in part, to rare and devastating disasters, including Hurricane Katrina and the Asian tsunami. Religious organizations were most likely to receive contributions, as two-thirds of the respondents gave to them. Next were charities that benefit children, older adults and the needy. [Source: The Positive Aging Newsletter] State By State Report Card on Education Effectiveness The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has issued a state-by-state report card on educational effectiveness that shows America’s K–12 schools are failing their students and putting America’s future competitiveness at risk. The report graded all 50 states and Washington, D.C., on nine broad categories including academic achievement, return on investment, truth in advertising, rigor of standards, and data quality. [Source: PEN Weekly Newsblast] Street Law Partners with PBS on Supreme Court Documentary Street Law recently announced a partnership with PBS on its innovative new series, The Supreme Court. Produced by New York City PBS affiliate WNET, the four-part documentary traces the history of the Court – from its creation, through the Rehnquist years – with particular emphasis on major cases and personal stories about the justices who have shaped our notions of justice and law. Fiscal Year 2008 Budget Progresses The Congressional Budget Office has released its estimates of the Administration’s budget, creating a document that “scores” program costs and savings, and will guide decisions made by the Budget Committee. Meanwhile, the Budget Committees in the House and Senate are preparing resolutions, with the House aiming to vote the week of March 19 and the Senate before the end of the month.
Partnership for Play Every Day Launches Partnership for Play Every Day, convened by the YMCA of the USA and the National Recreation and Park Association, among others, is a public-private sector collaboration calling for all American children secure at least 60 minutes of play every day. As part of the launch, the Partnership released the most comprehensive study to date, done by Stanford University, examining the barriers that prevent youth from engaging in adequate levels of physical activity and the benefits of encouraging our children to adopt healthy lifestyles. Learn more about the campaign and read the study at www.playeveryday.org Best Practices for Engaging and Retaining Older Workers David Walker, comptroller general, testified before the Senate Special Committee on Aging committee and presented findings from a study GAO conducted on older workers. The study touted multiple benefits for older workers remaining on the job, and for companies to recruit, retrain and retain them. The study also lists best practices and strategies to circumvent barriers, including national PR campaigns, legislation and regulatory changes. View the report by clicking here. (PDF) Career and Technical Education Database of Best Practices The Association for Career and Technical Education Best Practices and Programs Web page showcases innovative programs and creative teaching found in career and technical education across the country. The site allow teachers, school administrators, parents, students and policymakers to read and share information that may improve how career and technical education is taught in their programs and schools. Child Support Special Improvement Project On February 21, Youth Service America and State Farm Companies Foundation awarded 29 students (ages 8-25) and 71 teachers and service-learning coordinators with State Farm Good Neighbor Service-Learning Grants for National & Global Youth Service Day, April 20-22. The $1,000 grants were awarded in 37 states encompassing all academic disciplines and designed to expose more people to the positive benefits of service-learning.
