POLICYBYTES

Fiscal Year 2008 Budget

The President submitted his Fiscal Year 2008 Budget Proposal to Congress on February 5, 2007. Once again, the proposal seeks to make significant cuts to domestic discretionary programs, particularly programs in the service sector.

The National Human Services Assembly is working with its member organizations to create a strategy to call on Congress to provide in its Budget Resolution adequate funding for programs that are essential to the well-being of millions of Americans.

Materials and resources will be shared with member organizations as the strategy takes shape, and some materials will be posted to our Federal Budget pages.

Proposed Budget Impacts Youth

The National Collaboration for Youth has created a chart that identifies programs proposed for significant cuts or elimination in the Fiscal Year 2008 Budget Proposal.  View the chart by clicking here (PDF).

Fiscal Year 2007 Funding

Following the House, the Senate approved a “year-long” continuing resolution to provide funding for federal departments and programs for the remainder of Fiscal Year 2007 at Fiscal Year 2006 levels, with some exceptions.  The president signed the measure.  Completing this process, left over from the 109th Congress, now clears the way for attention to be focused on the Fiscal Year 2008 Budget Resolution and subsequent appropriations process.  To view a summary or the full joint resolution, follow this link: http://www.nassembly.org/ncy/FY2007Appropriations.htm.

New F.I.L.M. Program – Bridge to Terabithia: Build Bridges
Bridge to Terabithia, a Newbery Medal-winning book by Katherine Paterson, is now a Walt Disney Pictures and Walden Media film, playing in theaters nationwide.  The movie tells the story of a boy named Jess Aarons and a girl named Leslie Burke, two unlikely fifth grade friends. In order to deal with social hardships at school and problems at home, Jess and Leslie create the imaginary land of Terabithia in the woods near their homes, where they rule as king and queen.  When a terrible tragedy occurs, Jess realizes just how much he has learned and gained from his friendship with Leslie.  As part of the 3 step F.I.L.M. program based on this story, youth are encouraged to participate in activities from the activity guide, Bridge to Terabithia: Build Bridges, which is now available for free download.  To learn more about this program and to download the activity guide, please click here.
