Because of Winn Dixie...Because of You

The National Collaboration for Youth announces a new web portal to "Because of Winn Dixie...Because of You."  The website is based on the Newberry Award winning children's novel and soon to be major motion picture, "Because of Winn Dixie." The Because of You program encourages youth to read the book, volunteer to read the book to someone else, then go see the movie. NCY has partnered with Truly Moving Pictures and Walden Media to bring you items such as an activity guide, message board and other useful resources. Gather up your kids, gather up a group of kids—or go by yourself—to see this delightful film.

New Publications Released by State Early Childhood Policy Technical Assistance Network

American Camp Association Announces Study Outcomes

The American Camp Association recently announced the posting of results on their multi-year study of outcomes in camp programs. Titled "Youth Development Outcomes of the Camp Experience," the project included thousands of parents and campers providing information before camp, at the end of camp, and six months after camp. More than a slogan, "Camp Gives Kids a World of Good" captures the essence of statistically significant growth in all ten of the dimensions studied as seen by parents, and growth in six of ten dimensions studied as seen by campers, and growth in all areas studied based on counselor observations. Generations United released an action agenda that calls for greater supports for grandparents and other relatives who are raising children. Comment on Panel on the Nonprofit Sector's Recommendations

The Panel on the Nonprofit Sector, convened by Independent Sector at the encouragement of the U.S. Senate Finance Committee, has developed recommendations to improve the governance, ethical conduct, and oversight of nonprofit organizations. Governors, Education and Business Leaders to Attend Summit on High Schools

Teleconferencing Series

The Child Welfare League of America's 2005 Teleconference Series includes five sessions from January to May on child trauma.  Specifically, they will focus on the developmental impact of child trauma; how knowledge of child trauma can enhance child welfare practice in various settings, such as schools and residential treatment centers; and evidence-based child trauma interventions that can be used to treat child sexual abuse. 

The next call is on February 24.

2005 Points of Light Foundation Member and Connect America Partner Teleconferences

The Points of Light Foundation offers teleconferences on a myriad of topics relevant to volunteer practitioners. Some take the form of short workshops; others are technical assistance calls; others may be discussion circles in which volunteer practitioners explore a new trend or rising concern in the field within the safe space of a facilitated call  Whatever form they take, the calls are designed to help volunteer practitioners and leaders build the capacity of their organizations and communities to engage and mobilize volunteers to help solve serious social issues.
