New Study Claims Medicare Could Lower Drug Costs According to a report by the Center for Economic and Policy Research, Medicare could pay lower prices for prescription drugs if it negotiated directly with the pharmaceutical industry rather than through private insurance companies. The report, The Savings from an Efficient Medicare Prescription Drug Benefit, claims that the drug benefit is far more costly than necessary because Congress did not make efficiency a top priority when it created the Medicare Modernization Act (MMA). Instead, the new drug plan ensures that private insurance companies provide the benefit and play an expanded role in the Medicare program. For more information and to download the report, click here. Budget Resolution Passes, Goes to President for Signature On February 1, the House of Representatives voted to approve the FY2006 Budget Reconciliation conference report (S. 1932). The bill passed by only two votes (216-214) and will be signed by the President soon. This bill makes deep cuts in Medicaid, student loans, child support enforcement, child care, foster care, and disability assistance in order to offset lost revenue from tax cuts. This is the “reconciliation” bill that started the budget process almost a year ago, and the process commences again on February 6 with the announcement of the Administration’s proposed Fiscal Year 2007 budget. For specific information on the impact of the Budget Reconciliation, we suggest visiting: Center on Budget and Policy Priorities Child Welfare League of America Leadership 18 Announces Concept Paper for Rebuilding Gulf Coast Leadership 18 is a coalition of America’s largest, best known and most-widely respected charitable organizations.
