NEWS & RESOURCES

Four Day Nonprofit Management Institute Hosted by the University of Notre Dame and the National Assembly
Through a shared commitment to collaboration in strengthening
nonprofit management, the National Human Services Assembly
and the University of Notre Dame’s Mendoza College of Business
are sponsoring a unique institute for nonprofit managers. For four
days, CEOs and other senior managers of nonprofit organizations
will have the opportunity to join their peers in exploring the most
challenging issues that impact their multiple roles. The Institute takes place at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana from March 13-16, 2007. For more information, download the brochure here. (PDF)

BBBS and Mentoring Featured During Super Bowl

During the Super Bowl on Sunday, CBS will begin airing a public service announcement on Big Brothers Big Sisters and mentoring, featuring the Colts’ head coach, Tony Dungy, and the Bears’ head coach, Lovie Smith.  Many might know of the historic significance of these coaches being the first African-Americans to coach in the Super Bowl, but after Sunday, some 90 million viewers will also learn of the mentor-mentee relationship between these two men.   The PSA issues a call to action encouraging more than 90 million viewers to visit www.BigBrothersBigSisters.org and volunteer.  For more information on the PSA, click here.

New Tool for Family/Child Advocates - Help Families Get a Break on Their Taxes

The National Women's Law Center and state child care advocates are conducting a Tax Credit Outreach Campaign to inform millions of families about the federal and state tax benefits for which they may be eligible, with special emphasis on reaching families through child care services networks. As part of the campaign, A Toolkit for Child Care Advocates is now available online. The publication helps the child care community conduct tax credit outreach during the 2007 tax filing season. It explains why tax credits matter to families, provides tips for conducting an outreach campaign, and includes sample fliers. For more information and to access the Toolkit, click here. Performance Measurements for Nonprofits

The Urban Institute released Building a Common Outcome Framework to Measure Nonprofit Performance, a new report focusing on performance measurements for nonprofits. This report, which suggests indicators for 14 program areas, provides guidance to nonprofits on what to measure and how to do it. The publication will help the looming reporting nightmare that will occur unless a common framework for outcome measurement emerges. For more information and to download the Report, click here.

New Report - How Young People View Their Lives
The Pew Research Center reports on how young people today view their current and future lives. The report identifies young people as Generation Next, which includes all Americans ages 18-25. The study looked at political outlook, job prospects and more. For more information, click here.

Camp Fire USA Selected for Emerging Leaders Initiative

Camp Fire USA has been selected to participate in the Service-Learning Emerging Leaders Initiative along with 22 other nonprofit organizations throughout the United States. This two-year initiative is designed to prepare a “new culturally diverse generation of service-learning leaders who are committed to working with traditionally under-served populations, schools, and communities,” according to the National Service-Learning Partnership. POLICYBYTES

Fiscal Year 2007 Funding

The House of Representatives has passed a joint resolution that will provide funding for federal departments and programs for the remainder of Fiscal Year 2007.  It is scheduled for a vote in the Senate the week of February 5.

Most programs are funded at FY2006 levels with increases to cover the cost of pay increases, maintain staffing levels, avoid furloughs and meet increased costs or workloads.  The Appropriations Committee cut more than 60 programs below FY2006 levels and rescinded unobligated balances to provide for savings to address critical needs.  As anticipated, all earmarks in the bill and report were eliminated.  To view a summary or the full joint resolution, click here.

Fiscal Year 2008 Budget

February 5 marks the arrival on Capitol Hill of the administration’s fiscal year 2008 budget proposal.  As in years past, the National Human Services Assembly will take an active role in working with Congress to call for adequate funding for the human service sector.  Resources and information will be posted on our Federal Budget pages.

Demographics of Poverty Changing

An analysis of poverty in cities and suburbs of the nation's 100 largest metropolitan areas, based on data from the 2005 American Community Survey and Census 2000, indicates that in 1999 large cities and their suburbs had nearly equal numbers of poor individuals, but by 2005 the suburban poor outnumbered their city counterparts.  In cities and suburbs where overall poverty rates rose from 1999 to 2005, child poverty rates rose faster.  For the Brookings Institution analysis of the findings, click here.

Low-Income Families Can Benefit From Split Refunds
All tax filers due a federal refund will now have the option to have their refund direct deposited to up to three destinations.  Low-income families often receive substantial tax refunds and the ability to direct part of these refunds toward immediate spending needs and part to savings makes asset building much easier.  A new website, SplitRefunds.net, provides additional background information, tools for tax site managers, and links to organizations that promote the Earned Income Tax Credit and asset building.  For more information, click here.  (Note: This article is from the January edition of Family Strengthening News.  To see the full issue and subscribe, click here.)
