Call for Nominations - Essence of Leadership Awards

The National Human Services Assembly invites your nominations for awards recognizing leaders in the sector. Who is the national nonprofit health and human service executive you most admire--the one who has accomplished the most and worked well in collaboration with others? Name the national board leader who has accomplished incredible things and has done so bridging organizations and sectors. Who in the media has not just reported well on health and human service issues but has made a difference with his or her reporting? And what public figure has bridged the chasms of politics and other divisions to effect change that improved lives by improving the effectiveness of human service policies and programs? Former National Assembly Board Chair to Head Foundation

Linda Childears, the chief executive of Young Americans Bank since its inception in 1987, will take over as president and chief executive of the Daniels Fund starting August 1. The Daniels Fund, begun in 1997, is the Rocky Mountain region's largest charitable foundation, with $1.1 billion in assets. It provides grants and scholarships in Denver and across the Rocky Mountain region. The fund also gives grants to nonprofits to combat alcoholism and homelessness and to improve education and ethics. Childears is a former of the National Assembly Chair of the Board of Directors. For more information, click here.

75 VISTA Positions now available through Points of Light Foundation & Volunteer Center National Network

The Points of Light Foundation is currently recruiting 75 VISTA members for the second year of the Strengthening Communities AmeriCorps*VISTA Initiative. The program is a national VISTA demonstration grant, provided by the Corporation for National & Community Service to Points of Light, which will place 75 VISTA members in over 35 Volunteer Centers across the Network. These VISTAs will recruit volunteers and build the capacity of local organizations to better engage volunteers around four key areas of work: Empowering Faith-Based and Grassroots Organizations, Asset Development and Wealth Creation (EITC), Strengthening Families (Family Volunteering), and Homeland Security: Emergency and Disaster. The State of 50+ America 2005

AARP recently released a study examining the health and welfare of America's 50+ population. The report shows an increased reliance on Social Security among other significant factors. The State of 50+ America 2005 is AARP's second annual “report card” on the quality of life of Americans age 50 and older. It continues their examination of the many changes in the well-being of the 50+ population. To download a free copy, click here.

MYPYRAMID.GOV
The USDA recently replaced the old Food Guide Pyramid with MyPyramid , a new food guidance system that emphasizes the need for a more individualized approach to improving diet and lifestyle. At MyPyramid.gov , you can key in your age, gender, and physical activity level to get a personal recommendation based on your daily caloric intake according to the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans . State of the World's Mothers 2005

Save the Children recently released State of the World's Mothers 2005 , which examines the ways investing in girls' education can benefit present and future generations of children, and society as a whole.  It points to effective, affordable programs and policies that are working, even in the world's poorest countries.  The report also includes Save the Children's sixth annual Mothers' Index that identifies the best – and worst – countries to be a mother and child through a comprehensive look at the well-being of mothers and children in 110 countries.  For more information, click here.

United Way of America Resources to Help Organizations Gain More Value from Program Outcome Measurement

Connecting Program Outcome Measurement to Community Impact offers guidance on mining program outcome learning to advance community impact.  It includes questions that stimulate agency discussions, patterns in agency findings that suggest community issues, a checklist of helpful procedures, and examples from United Ways that have made the connection successfully.  How Program Outcome Measurement Contributes to Community Impact identifies three strategic areas and 17 specific ways that it contributes to community impact work.  Both resources are available at http://national.unitedway.org/outcomes/resources/ .

Girls Inc. Urges Congress to Address Violence Against Girls

A May 11 Congressional briefing sponsored by Girls Incorporated explored how violence affects girls in their homes, schools, communities, and relationships. Justice Department statistics show that the year in a female's life when she is at greatest risk for sexual assault is 14. Speakers called on Congress to extend needed services and attention to girls and young women in the upcoming reauthorization of the Violence Against Women Act. For more information, click here.

Analysis: Social Security Lifts One Million Children from Poverty Annually 

New data released at a Capitol Hill briefing on May 2 show that Social Security benefits lifted one million children under age 18 above the poverty line in 2002 and that, apart from the earned income tax credit, no other government program lifts more children above the poverty line.  The data, analyzed by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, include new figures for all 50 states and the District of Columbia .  The briefing, presented by Generations United, the National Assembly, and other organizations, highlighted the critical support that Social Security provides children and other vulnerable populations, including people with disabilities.  For more information, click here.

Budget Resolution Calls for Cuts in Programs and Taxes

Congress adopted a budget resolution on April 28 that includes $10 billion in Medicaid cuts over five years; $3 billion in cuts to agriculture programs, which include food stamps; and $23 billion in cuts to domestic discretionary programs in 2006, a 6% cut below current funding, adjusted for inflation. The resolution does not specify which discretionary programs will be cut, but education, housing, child care, nutrition, and environmental programs are all in this category. The resolution also calls for $100 billion in tax cuts over the next five years. The Coalition on Human Needs has developed a simple, two-page description of what is in the budget resolution and a timeline for the next phase of the budget process. Nonprofit Panel Invites Comments in Preparation for June Report

The Panel on the Nonprofit Sector invites the charitable community to comment on draft recommendations for its June report to the leaders of the Senate Finance Committee. The recommendations cover areas such as board and executive compensation, travel expenses, periodic review of nonprofit status, and non-cash contributions. The deadline for comments is May 19. A Brief Guide to TANF Reauthorization Issues In 2005

Congress has been debating reauthorization of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program and changes to related programs including child care and child support since 2002.  This guide from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities compares different versions of reauthorization legislation passed earlier this year by the Senate Finance Committee and the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Human Resources.  For more information, click here.

Computer Associates Offers Grants for Children & Technology
Computer Associates is offering support to nonprofit organizations for programs that “connect children to the power of technology.”  Specifically, grants are available in the following areas: enhancing student learning and enthusiasm for math, science and technology; promoting innovative use of technology in the classroom; promoting technology education to underserved children; exposing children to interactive technology; promoting technology as an innovative resource for children; promoting intergenerational technology learning

Bank One Corporate Contributions Program
The Bank One Corporate Contributions Program supports nonprofit organizations that improve the lives of people in the communities served by Bank One in Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Michigan, Missouri, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas, Utah, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. Funding is provided for programs that focus on community asset development, youth education, and arts and cultural enrichment. Applications are reviewed throughout the year.

The UPS Foundation is offering grants to further its mission to improve communities in a variety of ways, including support of programs that focus on education, hunger and family, and workplace literacy. RadioShack StreetSentz Community Grant Program
The RadioShack StreetSentz Community Grant Program is dedicated to strengthening the American way of life by helping families protect their children from abduction, violence and abuse. The program provides grants of up to $500 to nonprofit organizations, local municipalities, and schools that offer solutions to help prevent family violence/abuse and/or child abduction in RadioShack communities.
