Girl Scouts Briefing on What Girls Say About Healthy Living

Girl Scouts of the USA is holding a briefing on January 25 for The New Normal? What Girls Say About Healthy Living, a new original research report from the Girl Scout Research Institute.  The report sheds light on the childhood obesity crisis by asking girls directly how they define health and what motivates them to lead a healthier lifestyle.  Findings suggest that today’s girls are defining “health” on their own terms, placing the same value on emotional well-being and self-esteem as they do on diet and exercise.  The briefing is from 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. at the National Press Club in Washington, DC.  To RSVP, contact tompkins@girlscouts.org.

Major Leadership Shortage in Nonprofit World Expected in Next Two Decades

Nearly three-fourths of all nonprofit executives will reach retirement age over the next two decades, and charities will be hard pressed to replace them, according to a survey of 2,200 executive directors commissioned by the Annie E. Casey Foundation. It found that 73 percent of the people who now lead charities are members of the baby-boom generation — those born from 1946 to 1964. Twenty-three percent of the nonprofit leaders said they would leave their jobs before 2007, and another 42 percent said they expected to leave their positions by 2009. Most Large Firms to Maintain Retiree Drug Coverage in 2006

Four in five businesses (79 percent) that now provide retiree health benefits will accept government subsidies for continuing to provide retiree drug coverage at least as good as Medicare's coverage when the new drug benefit starts in 2006, according to a new survey of 300 of the nation's largest private-sector employers conducted by the Kaiser Family Foundation and Hewitt Associates. The History Channel® Partners with NMHA to Promote Lincoln Program
The History Channel and the National Mental Health Association recently announced a national partnership to promote the January 2006 special presentation of Lincoln. The program premiered on Monday, January 16th and will show an encore presentation this Saturday, January 21 at 8/7 Central. It honors the remarkable accomplishments of our 16th President despite his life-long struggle with depression, which the film argues was the driving force behind his ultimate transcendence from modest origins to the American Presidency.  THC and NMHA collaboration will focus on educating Americans on mental health through Abraham Lincoln’s experiences and work to dispel the stigma surrounding mental health problems and treatments.  Check your local listings for future showings of this program or visit www.historychannel.com/lincoln.

Chapin Hall Evaluates Community Partnerships for Protecting Children Program

The Chapin Hall Center for Children at the University of Chicago has released the results of a four-year-study evaluating the four-site Community Partnerships for Protecting Children (CPPC) pilot initiative, a reform effort embraced by many in the child welfare field as representing improvements over standard child welfare practice. New Report - The Science of Aging Gracefully

The Science of Aging Gracefully: Scientists and the Public Talk About Aging Research, a new report from Public Agenda, assesses the potential of research into delaying or preventing age-related diseases on work, families, and the economy, and argues that the public is more supportive of such research than the political climate currently indicates. Major Child Health Issues in the Budget Conference Agreement
The conference agreement on the budget reconciliation bill, scheduled for a final vote in the House of Representatives on February 1, includes far-reaching changes to children's health care coverage.  The key provisions affecting children are summarized and discussed in a new paper from Georgetown University's Center for Children and Families.  For more information, click here.

National Urban League Calls New Orleans Rebuilding Plan "Exclusionary and Disrespectful"

National Urban League President Marc Morial expressed concern that the new plan unveiled by the New Orleans Rebuilding Commission may violate the rights of Katrina victims to maintain their property and return.  The proposed plan would give many of the city's racially diverse neighborhoods limited time to prove they should not be bulldozed, while preventing city permits to be issued to homeowners attempting to rebuild in those areas.  For more information, click here.

Top Health Policy Stories of 2005

The growing number of the uninsured, the public health impact of Hurricane Katrina, and the start of registration for the new Medicare drug benefit were among the top health policy stories of 2005, according to respondents to an informal online survey conducted by The Commonwealth Fund and the journal Health Affairs.  For more information, click here.

GAO Report on Youth Opportunity Grant Program

In December 2005, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) released a report on the examination of the Youth Opportunity (YO) Grant program, stating that many valuable lessons could be learned on how to serve at-risk youth, but that the Department of Labor needs to complete its impact analysis and release the data and publish all related research reports from the program’s evaluation.  The Department of Labor agreed to do so.  As part of the report, the GAO surveyed 36 YO program directors, visited seven sites and analyzed available data from the Department of Labor.  To read the highlights and the full report, click here.

New Briefs Assess Medicaid Provisions of Budget Reconciliation Bill

Two new briefs from the Kaiser Commission on Medicaid and the Uninsured explore Medicaid provisions in the budget reconciliation bill that will be voted on by the U.S. House of Representatives in February. One brief provides an overview of the federal budget environment, highlights key Medicaid savings proposals in the reconciliation bill and discusses the implications of the proposed changes. The second brief provides a snapshot of who relies on nursing home services and reviews the research on asset transfer and its impact on Medicaid nursing home care eligibility.  For more information, click here.

F.I.L.M. - Finding Inspiration in Literature and Movies
F.I.L.M. Featured Movie Hits #1 at the Box Office
In its newest program, F.I.L.M. (Finding Inspiration in Literature & Movies) is featuring Walt Disney Pictures’ Glory Road, starring Josh Lucas. Last weekend, the film opened at number one in box office sales. This achievement marks a great moment for F.I.L.M. whose goal is to influence youth to choose movies that convey positive messages. It was the first time a featured F.I.L.M. movie rose to number one on opening weekend. The project's two previous films came close, with both Dreamer and Because of Winn Dixie posting at number two on their opening weekends. Glory Road grossed nearly $17 million, sending Hollywood a clear message that more movies with positive themes are desired.  Youth are encouraged to see this film and complete F.I.L.M.’s Glory Road: Choose Your Road program.  For more information on the weekend’s box office standings, click here.
