Communities benefit when volunteers step up, and more than a quarter of American adults volunteered through a formal organization in 2011, an increase of 1.5 million volunteers over the previous year and the highest rate since 2005, according to the Corporation for National and Community Service and the National Conference on Citizenship. Volunteer and Civic Life in America says the 64.3 million adult volunteers rendered 7.9 billion volunteer hours, producing a total contribution value of more than $170 billion. 01/24/2013
