Homeless families, including nearly 50,000 children, accounted for 4 percent of all Head Start families in 2011. HHS’s Administration for Children and Families (ACF) has released resources and guidance for early childhood programs that serve some of the estimated 670,000 children under the age of 6 – 42 percent of 1.6 million homeless children – who are on the streets or in homeless shelters.
